The West Fork Library encourages and accepts donations of books and other materials. Donated materials will be evaluated against the same criteria as purchased materials. The West Fork Library makes the final decision on the use or other disposition of all donations and decides the conditions of display, housing, and access to the materials.
Purpose: Allow library staff to responsibly consider all donations and bring in the advice of the library board to ensure:
- Monetary gifts may be unrestricted or designated as memorials/honorariums. Donors of funds may suggest specific furniture, equipment, artwork, programming, or services, as well as subjects or titles of collection materials to be acquired with their donation. However, the West Fork Library reserves the right of final selection in order to meet the utilization and space criteria of the Collection Development Policy.
- Because of IRS regulations, library staff cannot appraise the value of any donated item.
- A donor may be asked to sign a Deed of Gift form transferring ownership of the materials to the West Fork Library. The library is unable to notify donors of all collection decisions and cannot call them back to pick up items.
- Collection items such as books, audiobooks, and DVDs will be evaluated by library staff. Items may be added to the collection, sold, re-donated, or discarded.
- The library does not accept books and materials left outside unattended.
- Items offered for donations other than money, books, audiobooks, or DVDs, such as computer equipment, personal property, art objects, antiques, museum pieces, plants, landscaping, real estate, etc., must be approved by the library board before acceptance.
